Description

The Trapezium has always been an elusive target, concealed behind a veil of glare. It is a pretty good indicator of focus and optics. As an experiment I took 176 10 sec subs with the TOA 130 reduced and ASI 1600 to see if the Trapezium would reveal itself. I was at the end of another shoot and I was using the Ha filter as the Moon was up. I wanted to see if an HDR composition was a viable way to go with M42. Despite the short subs, It was a bit of a challenge pulling the Trapezium out of the brilliant core. But one good thing is nothing was overexposed, so 10 sec seems like a good duration...at least for Ha. Lum may need 1-2 sec. This is an aggressive crop that was up-sampled by 3x or so....so the trapezium was SMALL in the original FOV-even at full resolution. So I increased the size to bring the cluster up close. It might be my imagination, but I think I see hints of the e an f components. I bet Lum would get them.....More aperture would help, though I was surprised at what 5" could yield. This will not be developed into a full image--it was just a test. Framing was off, and I plan to shoot M42 with a shorter focal length.
